What are screening questions and how can I add them?

Screening questions are preliminary questions that employers can include in the recruitment process to determine whether applicants meet specific criteria for their roles advertised.

If you have chosen to use Patchwork Hub’s candidate management system to handle applications, you have the opportunity to add screening questions when posting your jobs. However, if you have chosen to receive candidates by using either of the following methods, you will not be able to add screening questions:

  • Linking to an external website by adding a link to the ‘Provide URL’ section of the Post a Job page.
  • Directing candidates to apply via an email address.

Screening questions are typically included in the first stage of the recruitment process so most employers keep these questions very minimal if they include them.  We recommend only asking essential questions to ensure that employers do not deter potential applicants who would be a good fit.

Some examples of common screening questions are:

  • Are you over 18 years old?
  • Do you have the right to work in the UK?

How to add screening questions when using Patchwork Hub?

To add screening questions when posting jobs on Patchwork Hub: 

  • Tick the ‘Add Screening Questions’ tickbox on the Post a Job page.
  • Click ‘Add Question’ and then type in the question you would like to ask candidates.
  • Once you have entered the question, simply click ‘OK’.

You can add as many screening questions as you like using this function and can add additional questions by clicking the ‘Add Question’ button again.

You can also delete questions that you have added by clicking the ‘Remove’ button to the right of the questions you have added.

Once you have included screening questions in your job advert and published the job, all candidates who apply for your role(s) will be asked to answer the screening questions when they apply to your job through the platform.
